In 1778, James Cook landed at Waimea Bay, naming the archipelago “Sandwich Islands”. Western influence started to grow and in 1883 American Colonists controlled most of the economy and overthrew the Kingdom in a peaceful way. In 1889 Hawaii became a territory of the United States. It is only in 1959 that it became Hawaii or the 50th State of the United States.
