LEARN SPANISH IN BARCELONA - SPANISH COURSE IN CATALUÑA
|
Barcelona, Spain
Minimum Age: 16 years
Average Age: 20 - 27 years |
|
|
|
Location |
 |
|
Barcelona is one of the most beautiful and exciting cities in the world. It has a
huge number of attractions including a city centre which retains
its medieval street plan with charming streets, busy with people
and full of life; some stunning modernist architecture including
several buildings by Gaudi - Spain's most famous architect;
dozens of museums including one dedicated to Picasso, another to
Miro and yet another to Barcelona's world famous football club!
The Sagrada Família, Casa Batlló, Casa Amatller and Casa Milà are some examples of
this.
There is no better to make acquaintance with Barcelona than
taking a walk down
La Rambla (a bustling avenue) famous for the vivid colors
of its flower stalls and innumerable street artists. The old town, comprising the Gothic Quarter,
the Ribera and Raval districts, and famed for its historical
monuments, narrow streets and bohemian atmosphere, is the perfect
place for a stroll.
|
 |
| Navigating through the maze of streets
is essential in order to gain an understanding of the different periods in
the history of Barcelona and to admire its finest monuments:
traces of the Roman wall glimpsed between well-preserved Gothic
buildings, the remains of the Jewish Quarter, witnesses to the
industrial expansion of the 19th century and the design of the
20th. Musicians in the medieval streets provide the ideal accompaniment.
|
 |
Barcelona is almost
as lively at night as it is during the day and has a unique, exciting
atmosphere, which provides the visitor with a truly unforgettable
experience. There are two major arts festivals during the year,
one in the summer and one in the autumn, as well as concerts
and shows of various kinds going on all the time. The city
enjoys an almost perfect climate; making it an ideal place to
be at any time of the year. It even has its own sandy beaches,
which are less than 15 minutes away from the school. The city's
geographical position also makes it the easiest (and cheapest)
Spanish city to reach from the rest of Europe. Direct flights
are also available from most cities in the world to Barcelona's prize-winning
international airport. |
|
School |
 |
|
The school is situated
in the center of the city - less than 5 minutes walk from
the Plaza Catalunya, which is the central square and communications
hub of the city.
The language school occupies 6 floors of a large corner
building, which has a distinctive, triangular shape (somewhat
similar to the famous 'flat-iron' building in New York). All of
our Spanish courses are given here, in over 40 air-conditioned
classrooms.
The building dates from the beginning of the last century
and has many attractive features: a very decorative street
entrance, lots of natural light, high ceilings, a marble staircase,
etc.
The school's facilities include:
- 40 air-conditioned classrooms, all with natural light
- An "electronic classroom" with Internet access
and WIFI
- A library and study centre
- A bar which is open all day providing hot and cold food
and drinks
- A terrace where students can relax in the sunshine
- Bathroom facilities for disabled students
|

The school |
The teachers are all university
graduates with extensive teaching experience. They have also
been specifically trained to teach Spanish as a foreign language,
which makes them highly effective when it comes to helping students
maximize learning. Many of our teachers also work in our Spanish
teacher training department.
The teaching staff can count on academic support and on-going
training under the supervision of the director of studies and
with the cooperation of the teacher training department. The
optimal quality of teaching that the school offers is constantly
reinforced through teachers' meetings, classroom observations
and teachers' workshops.
More than 2,000 students
learned Spanish on the premises last
year through the various courses
offered. There is plenty of
opportunity for our Spanish students to meet native Spanish
speakers, make friends and improve their fluency outside the
classroom, in the bars or at social events, etc. |
 |
|
Courses |
 |
|
| The main objective
of most of our Spanish courses is to improve the students' communicative
skills. The emphasis of classroom activities is therefore the
development of the students' abilities to speak and understand
spoken Spanish. For this reason, classes are conducted entirely
in Spanish and students are given plenty of opportunity to practice
the sort of language they are likely to need outside the classroom.
We don't just want our students to "know" Spanish,
we want them to be able to use it!
Lessons also focus on grammar, vocabulary, reading
and writing skills and a wide variety of materials are used, including published materials from many sources as well as
materials which have been written by our own teachers.
|
 |
 |
All materials that the students
need to work with, are provided free of charge. This includes
a Spanish grammar book which is given to students at the beginning
of their course.
Students who attend private classes will have course materials
designed specifically to meet their particular needs.
The teaching and the course program are carefully supervised
by the Director of Studies, who is also responsible for ensuring
that students are placed in the appropriate levels and that
their progress is satisfactory.
|
| While the atmosphere in the classroom
is generally relaxed and informal, students should be prepared
to work hard and participate fully. |

DELE Certification
Courses (20 lessons per week) |
| MIN. 4 WEEKS, 9:30 - 13:30,
Intermediate Level required
The Instituto
Cervantes, the Spanish equivalent of the British Council
or the Goethe Institute, organizes exams in the Spanish language
known as "Diploma de Español como Lengua Extranjera"
(or DELE). These are offered at three levels: 'Inicial', 'Básico'
and 'Superior'.
These levels are roughly equivalent to the University of
Cambridge's English language exams: PET, First Certificate
and Proficiency (i.e. intermediate, advanced and very advanced).
All three exams include reading comprehension, writing, listening
comprehension, grammar and vocabulary and oral expression
components. All five parts of the exam are taken on the same
day. The "Inicial" exam takes a total of 2 hours
50 minutes to complete; "Básico" lasts a
total of 3 hours 45 minutes and the "Superior" exam
4 hours.
The school offers courses designed to prepare students for
these DELE exams, each lasting 4 weeks. Students have to register
for the exams at least six weeks in advance as we want to
be able to advise students which level we think they should
enter. To do this properly, we need to have the students in
the school for at least 2 weeks prior to registration.
The timetable of classes
is therefore exactly the same, i.e. 4 hours per day from 09.30
to 13.30, from Monday to Friday. Time will be spent
practicing exam techniques, taking past papers, etc.
The exams themselves are currently held at the University
of Barcelona. The examination fees (which are set by the University)
are shown below, and are subject to change. Exam fees are
between 115 and 160 EUR depending on the level of exam.

Business
Spanish Course (20 or 30 lessons per week) |
| 2 WEEKS, Intermediate Level required
The school offers courses in Business Spanish which consist of 4
to 6 hour lessons each day (from 09.30 - 13.30 and 14.30 -16.30) for 2 weeks.
Students who take the 6-hours per day course can choose to take the
business exam at the end of the second week.
Students attend a Business Spanish Course which will provide
them with training in General Spanish including work on
vocabulary, grammar and all the four skills (reading, writing,
listening and speaking) focusing on the Spanish used in a Business context.
At the end of the course, students can take an exam which is
organized by the Madrid Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with
the University of Alcalá. The exams are not obligatory
but students should expect a certain amount of classroom time
to be spent on activities designed to help students prepare
for these exams. These exams are available at two levels, Certificado
Básico, and Certificado Superior.
The lower of the two levels (Básico) recognizes that
students have a basic competence in Business Spanish which should
allow them to perform routine tasks in a Business context. |
 |
| The second level (Superior)
recognizes a more advanced level of competence and familiarity
with the technical language used in the Business world.
The exams are held in the school on the Saturday at the end
of the course.
Exam fees (optional): 145 EUR

tuition per day. Students can either study entirely in this

Spanish for
Teenagers (13-17 years) (15 lessons per week) |
Our Spanish for teenagers
course takes place in Tarragona, a pleasant
coastal resort approximately 100 km south of Barcelona (86 km
from the airport). Tarragona is a provincial capital and has
a population of around 115,000. It is situated on the Costa
Dorada and is an ideal location for a teenage program of this
kind. The town is lively, but not too big; it has its own sandy
beaches within walking distance of the school; it is very close
to Port Aventura (one of Europe's largest theme parks) and is
only an hour from Barcelona by bus or train.
This course for juniors is run as a joint venture between StudyGlobal
Barcelona and IH Tarragona. The Director of IH Tarragona is
Jane Delaney. Jane and her team have extensive experience of
organizing junior courses and dealing with younger students
- almost 90% of those at IH Tarragona.
The course includes a full social program.
Dates 2007
The course will run from 2 July to 13 August and students will
be able to stay from 2 to 6 weeks. Possible arrival dates are
therefore as follows:
- Sunday 29th of June (2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 weeks)
- Sunday 06th of July (2, 3, 4, or 5 weeks)
- Sunday 13th of July (2, 3, or 4 weeks)
- Sunday 20th of July (2 or 3 weeks)
- Sunday 27th of July (2 weeks)
Students should arrange departure flights for the Saturday after
their course finishes.
Two types of accommodation are available:
- Host families - single or shared rooms
- Student residence - single or shared rooms
In all cases, the accommodation is with full board. Students
with dietary restrictions or any other special needs are requested
to make these known in advance. We recommend students bring €80
- €120 per week for pocket money, etc.
|
The course fee includes:
- Airport transfer service on arrival and departure
- 3 hours of Spanish classes per day in multinational groups
- All teaching materials, tests and certificates
- Accommodation as requested
- Full board (with packed lunches some weekdays and excursions)
- Full social program of sports and other activities including
local visits and excursions
- Local bus pass
|
 |
Insurance
All students will be covered by a basic insurance policy while
in Tarragona. However, we strongly recommend students to take
out additional travel insurance in their country of origin
to cover any loss, sickness or accident which may occur during
the course.

Activities
+ Excursions |
 |
|
| Centro de Lenguas
Barcelona organizes a varied program of social activities for
our Spanish students. These include a "Welcome" cocktail,
visits and excursions to places of interest in and around Barcelona, films in Spanish, concerts by local musicians, and "exchange
evenings" where students can meet and talk with some
of our other students who are learning English, French or German
in the school. We also take students out in the evening twice
a month to experience some of Barcelona's unforgettable nightlife.
All these activities, including local transport costs, are
included in the course fee.
The Social Program is changed every two weeks so that students
staying for longer periods will not have to repeat specific
activities. All students are given a copy of the Social Program
planned for the following 2-week period when they arrive.
|
 |
| We also organize full-day
excursions to towns and places of interest outside Barcelona.
These excursions are organized twice a month during the summer
months and once a month during the rest of the year. Please
note that for these full day excursions outside Barcelona
we charge a supplement of €20 to help pay for the cost
of the coach and guide.
Barcelona has fabulous beaches within 15 min of the centre
A typical 2-week social program might be:
